I’m Erika Loret de Mola, a first-generation Mexican-American who received their BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and their Master’s in Visual Communication Design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I’m an artist and designer who mixes the two disciplines in my work, with a focus on typography.
Typography, as expressed through words, is fundamental to my work, both a means of expression and a subject of inquiry. I strive to communicate, share, and disseminate information. Absorbing and exposing myself to new experiences and information allows me to share new and helpful information with my community. My affinity for novelty drove me to be a multi-media artist who relies on materiality as a storytelling tool; materials come with an unwritten history, and I respond to that history by choosing mediums that amplify the meaning behind my work.
